About Me
Hello everyone! My name is Michael Smith. I am 44 years old and earned a BBA from Tiffin University, and now nearing the end of my journey towards my MBA with a concentration in Sports Management. I am originally from Columbus and now live in Oregon, Ohio, with my girlfriend, our three-year-old daughter, and my girlfriend’s twelve-year-old daughter. I also have a 21-year-old son who lives in Louisiana. When not in the middle of a pandemic, I enjoy playing poker, watching and attending sporting events, and going to concerts.
I am a retired United States Marine Gunnery Sergeant and served a little over 21 years. During that time, I traveled and lived all over the world. I was stationed in Cuba, California, North Carolina, and Maryland and have deployed to Iraq, a few countries in Western Africa, and had several stops in between. I take pride in my accomplishments, and I often relate them to my schoolwork and blogs, so I will apologize ahead of time if it seems that I tend to ramble on about my experiences.
I had no aspirations of furthering my education upon retirement from the military in 2017. I planned to transfer my educational benefits to my son, who decided that he did not want to go to college just before graduating high school, even though it would have been completely paid for with my benefits. Instead of those benefits going to waste, I decided not to go straight back to work but focus on furthering my education. I enjoy school and take a lot of pride in my work.
I am currently a substitute teacher while also doing my internship with the Clay High School athletic department with Oregon City Schools. This is an opportunity to get my foot in the door at the local schools to work toward my aspirations of becoming an athletic director. I had a great relationship with my athletic director during high school sports, which encouraged me to take this path.
