November 19, 2021 | Girls’ Basketball Versus Southview (5.0 hours)

It is the first set of games of the season for the Clay Eagles girls’ basketball team! A triple-header—Freshmen, Junior Varsity, and Varsity. The Eagles faced a formidable opponent in the Southview Cougars. Southview competes for league championships each year and is expected to do so again this year. On the other hand, the Eagles have not had success in past years in basketball. Both the Freshmen and Junior Varsity Eagles won in tightly contested matches, but the Varsity fell a bit short, losing by nine points—closer than expected.

I spent most of the evening scanning tickets. I was scheduled to assist with game administration, but we had someone call in sick, so I had to pick up the slack. I do not mind working the gate as it allows me to work on my interpersonal skills. I am starting to enjoy being the smiling face that the fans first see when they enter the building.

Toward the end of the evening, I was able to go and enjoy the rest of the varsity game. I sat with Mark and Beth Kohler, the assistant principal of Clay High School. Beth and I worked together in the past as girls’ basketball coaches for the Oregon Recreation league a few years ago. Both of our daughters (her youngest) played basketball, and her eldest is now on the Freshmen team. It was good reconnecting with her and will prove to be another valuable contact in the school.
